Most farmers in Ethiopia are small landholders, such is the case at Biftu Gudina. It is a small cooperative consisting of 134 men and 62 women farmers. Coffee is meticulously sorted, pulped, washed, and then dried on raised beds for 10-15 days. Established in 2012, Biftu Gudina has become an exemplary producer of quality-focused coffee. All members are trained in industry best practices; planting shade trees, picking method, processing method. Members are paid a premium for their high-quality cherries and share the profit from the cooperative. The name ‘Biftu Gudina’ so fittingly means “a ray of development” in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia.
